Neuropsychological Testing

Neuropsychological testing or assessment is a clinical procedure used to determine the extent of possible thought or behavior issues following diagnosed or suspected brain injury or brain disease.

Through a series of simple questions and tests, your doctor can learn whether your nervous system is functioning properly or not.

Testing is available for children and adolescents (ages 5 to 18), adults, and the elderly.

Who We Test

Doctors may refer individuals for testing if they have complaints that involve:

  • motor or sensory changes
  • memory issues
  • attention problems
  • trouble processing information
  • remembering words
  • vision, perception, and integration issues
  • problem solving or impaired reasoning

We also test patients who have conditions that might affect central nervous system functioning, such as:

  • traumatic, brain injury
  • heart disease/vascular disease or disorder
  • history of encephalitis
  • epilepsy, MS, or other white matter disease
  • diabetes
  • surgeries
  • organ transplant
  • toxic exposure
  • brain tumors
  • effects of treatment for cancer

We test children for conditions such as:

  • ADHD
  • learning disabilities
  • autism
  • Aspergers

And we test for psychiatric issues that have a cognitive component or complaint not being addressed by psychiatric medications or therapy, such as:

  • depression
  • anxiety
  • bipolar disorder
  • schizophrenia

What We Assess

  • brain functions, including motor and sensory functioning
  • visual perception and processing
  • speech and comprehension
  • thought processing and efficiency issues
  • attention
  • learning, memory, and executive functions: flexibility, impulsivity, inhibition, problem solving, reasoning
  • personality/mood and psychiatric contributions to the cognitive complaints
