Clinical Pastoral Education
Welcome to the WVU Healthcare ACPE CPE program.
CPE is theological and professional education for ministry. In ACPE CPE, theological students, ordained clergy, members of religious orders, and qualified laypersons minister to patients and families in our hospital setting, under a qualified supervisor.
The students in this program serve as ecumenical and interfaith chaplains at WVUH providing spiritual care to patients, families, and staff. Through providing ministry, reflecting on the ministry, sharing experiences with peers in the program and supervisor, reading, attending seminars, and participating in supervision, the CPE students are able to grow in personal and pastoral self-awareness, as well as ministry skills.

Program Options
The ACPE CPE program at WVUH has two different programs.
The Extended Program is for entry level students.
This program is conducted one day a week, usually on Wednesdays, from January through July. The Extended students must be on site from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm each Wednesday for patient visitation and classes. In addition, these students serve as overnight chaplain on-call ten nights the during the program.
This program is designed for seminary students, clergy continuing education, or continuing education for laypersons. An undergraduate degree is required. This program requires a standard ACPE application, a $35.00 application fee, and $450.00 tuition. (Scholarships are available.) An interview with the supervisor must be conducted also. It provides one unit of CPE (400 hours).
The Yearlong Residency is designed for persons wishing to be certified chaplains with NACC or APC.
This program begins mid to late August each year and runs for a full 52 weeks. The residency provides a competitive educational stipend, and the residents are full-time employees with benefits of WVU Healthcare. After application, this program requires a day of interviews with Human Resources and various members of the Spiritual Care Department to determine a good fit for training at this setting.
The Residency offers three units of CPE (400 hours each). It requires $100.00 per unit tuition, as well as the 35.00 application fee. Students in this program must have one previous unit of CPE, a Masters’ degree in theology or religious studies, and be in the process of ordination (or the equivalent) with a recognized faith group.
