WVU Hospitals Expansion Facts

The expansion will create 114 new licensed beds bringing WVUHospitals’ total license to 645 beds.

The expansion will provide a new home for the Jon Michael Moore Trauma Center and Ruby Memorial Hospital Emergency Department.

The tower will add 15 beds to WVU Children’s Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, bringing the total number of beds to 54.

The expansion will create about 750 new jobs (600 full-time equivalency positions) across WVU Healthcare, which includes WVU Hospitals and University Health Associates.

With the construction of the new tower, Rosenbaum Family House and the Child Development Center (the onsite daycare facility) will grow by 20 percent and move to another location on campus.

The expansion will include major renovations to WVU Hospitals’ clinical laboratories and a new facility for the morgue.

More than 5,000 patients are transferred to WVU Hospitals from other hospitals in the state and region each year.

In the last quarter of 2011, WVU Hospitals had to delay access to stable patients for more than 845 hours due to a lack of available beds.

The last expansion, which was initiated in 2003 and became fully operational in 2008, added 105 beds and four operating rooms.
