Just Desserts fundraiser to benefit brain cancer research and help patients

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – You are assured a sweet time at the Third Annual Just Desserts fundraiser to benefit brain cancer research and patient comfort at the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center at West Virginia University.
Hosted by the Let the Journey Begin Fund Committee at the Cancer Center, Just Desserts will be held on Saturday, May 24 at St. John Parish in Morgantown. Doors open at 7 p.m.  Admission is $30 per person if purchased before the event and $35 per person at the door. The event features fabulous desserts from local eateries, numerous raffles, door prizes, and silent auctions.

This year’s event will also include a live auction with auctioneer Todd Rexroad, who will sell paintings and photos created and taken by family members and friends of Erin “Poppy” Polak and her aunt, Erin Dunmire.

The Let the Journey Begin Fund was created at the Cancer Center in 2011 by Polak after learning that Dunmire had been diagnosed with brain cancer. The name of the fund was inspired by Dunmire, who always told Polak that life is a journey, enjoy the moments. Dunmire is director of customer service at WVU Healthcare.

In just one year, Polak, her family, and friends raised $25,000 by selling bracelets, T-shirts, and other items bearing her aunt’s quote. The amount was enough to endow the Let the Journey Begin Fund, and their continued efforts have raised more than $107,000.

Monies in the fund will benefit brain cancer research and provide comfort care for adult brain cancer patients at the Cancer Center.

“I have been so blessed to be able to live my life as fully as possible in spite of brain cancer,” Dunmire said. “But others have not been so fortunate. I want to help them regain the normalcy in their lives that this horrific disease has stolen from them.”
