Dorsey’s Knob tree planting one highlight of WVU Healthcare Nurses’ Week celebration

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – National Nurses’ Week begins nationwide May 6, the birthday of nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale. This year’s theme, “Restoring Life Throughout Our Community,” is the focus of the special week’s celebration at WVU Healthcare.

“Our nurses, through their hard work and steadfast dedication to WVU Healthcare, continually strive to improve the health of West Virginians and all they serve through excellence in patient care, research, and education,” Mary Fanning, D.N.P., R.N., director of nursing administration at WVU Healthcare, said. “They are truly committed to advancing our mission, and we couldn’t be more appreciative of their support.”

In recognition of our area’s observance of National Nurses’ Week, the City of Morgantown will designate May 6-12 WVU Healthcare Restoring Life Throughout the Community Nursing Services Week. Dottie Oakes, M.S.N., WVU Healthcare vice president and chief nursing officer, will accept a proclamation at 7 p.m. at the beginning of the Tuesday, May 6 Morgantown City Council meeting. All are encouraged to attend the meeting at Morgantown City Hall, located at 389 Spruce Street.

In keeping with the week’s theme, “Restoring Life,” the WVU Healthcare Recruitment and Retention Nursing Council will host a tree planting ceremony at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 7 at Dorsey’s Knob Park, near the pavilion and children’s playground. Refreshments will be provided after the ceremony by Friends of WVUH.

“As nurses, we value life; it is very appropriate that the City is planting a living tree in our honor,” Oakes said. “I want to thank the City for this gift to recognize Nurses’ Week.”

One tradition unique to Nurses’ Week is the Blessing of the Hands. Throughout the week, chaplains visit individual units throughout the hospital to provide this service. Other unit-based activities are scheduled throughout the week as well.

WVU Healthcare nurses can also take advantage of discounts on scrubs and gift items at the WVUH Friends Gift Shop. WVUH Nursing Services employees are entitled to 40 percent off purchases through Monday, May 12.
