Bonnie’s Bus in contest to win $5,000 in gasoline

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Bonnie Wells Wilson Mobile Mammography program at West Virginia University is among hundreds of organizations across the country vying for a chance to be one of nine charities selected by Citgo’s Fueling Good Project to receive a $5,000 gift card.

If selected, the gas card would be used for Bonnie’s Bus, the state’s only travelling mammography unit.

“Bonnie’s Bus uses a significant amount of gasoline to provide life-saving breast cancer screening mammograms across West Virginia,” Sara Jane Gainor, director of Bonnie’s Bus, said. “The Bus needs gas to travel to reach women in rural areas, and once there, it must run continuously to keep the generators operating in order to keep the sensitive mammography equipment at the proper temperature.”

At approximately $500 a fill-up, Bonnie’s Bus gets about five miles to the gallon, which works out to nearly $21,000 annually in fuel costs.

“A Citgo gift card would enable us to travel to nearly a quarter of the visits Bonnie’s Bus makes to communities in our state,” Gainor said. “We could utilize the money we now spend on fuel to pay for uninsured women to receive a mammogram, for travel expenses for our staff, for breast cancer educational materials, or a myriad of other costs associated with a mobile mammography program.”

Bonnie’s Bus is a program of the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center and is owned and operated by West Virginia University Hospitals, Inc. Since the program began in 2009, the Bus has provided more than 5,100 screening mammograms in 43 West Virginia counties. Nearly 12 percent of the mammograms performed are first-time mammograms. To date, at least nine women were diagnosed with breast cancer after an initial screening on the Bus. No woman over age 40 is turned away due to lack of funding.

Bonnie’s Bus was created in honor of Bonnie Wells Wilson, the mother of Jo Statler, who succumbed to breast cancer in a remote area of the state with no access to screening mammography.

To help Bonnie’s Bus win the gift card, vote once a day through Sunday, Dec. 1 at Citgo’s Fueling Good website, http://fuelinggood.com/participate/entry?entryId=1522942.
