WVU Cancer Center to offer free clinical breast exams Oct. 2 and 5

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center at West Virginia University will offer free clinical breast exams twice in October – first at the Cancer Center and again at the WVU Healthcare Expo.

A clinical breast exam is a physical exam of the breast performed by a healthcare provider to check for lumps or other changes as defined by the National Cancer Institute.

The Cancer Center clinic will offer breast exams from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 2. Advance registration is required.  Call Pam Foley at 304-598-4500 to register.

Breast imaging will be available at the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center the evening of the exams, if a follow-up mammogram or ultrasound is warranted for a participant. The mammograms and ultrasounds are not free, but billing to insurers is provided. Women who lack insurance may be matched to government or nonprofit charities.

Anyone interested in having only a mammogram that evening can call the same number for an appointment at the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center.

The Cancer Center exhibit at the WVU Healthcare Expo on Oct. 5 will offer breast exams from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the entrance to J.C. Penney near Garfield’s Restaurant. Walk-ups are welcome.

Bonnie’s Bus, WVU’s digital mammography center on wheels, will also be there to offer screening mammograms from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Bus will be parked outside Garfield’s.

A patient must have an order from a healthcare provider to receive a mammogram. The physician and nurse practitioner providing breast exams at the Cancer Center exhibit can place an order for those participants that do not have one. Participants’ insurance companies will be billed.  Mammograms for women who do not have insurance will be covered by the West Virginia Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program or through special grant funds.

Pre-registration is preferred; call 304-293-2370. Walk-ins are welcome.
