WVU Healthcare nurses awarded with honor

WVU nursing professor also recognized as outstanding educator

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Each year, the West Virginia Center for Nursing celebrates the outstanding contributions individual nurses have made to both the people they serve directly and healthcare in the state as a whole. Eight of this year’s 51 recipients of the West Virginia Center for Nursing’s 2012 Celebrating Nursing Excellence Award were WVU Healthcare nurses. Each was recognized at the Center’s annual gala Oct. 6 in Parkersburg.

The Center for Nursing’s board of directors established award criteria in six areas of nursing, including clinical care, advanced practice, nursing education, nursing leadership, specialty nursing and nursing staff education. Awards were presented in four categories of excellence: leadership, staff education, advanced practice and clinical practice.

Among those recognized for excellence in nursing leadership:
•    Daniel Bazzoli, R.N., B.S.N., resource pool manager
•    Benjamin Campbell, R.N., B.S.N., house supervisor
•    James Juristy, R.N., B.S.N., house supervisor
•    David Keefover, R.N., house supervisor
•    Cari Morgan, R.N., house supervisor
•    Sharon Tylka, R.N., B.S.N., trauma/7 East manager

WVU Healthcare’s Danielle Roberts, R.N., CT Scan, and Mavis Strakal, R.N., 9 East, received awards for excellence in clinical practice. All are nurses at WVU Healthcare’s Ruby Memorial Hospital.

Barbara Nunley, Ph.D., associate professor at the West Virginia University School of Nursing, was also recognized for her significant contributions to nursing education.

The West Virginia Center for Nursing seeks to enhance and strengthen nursing excellence to optimize the health and healthcare of all West Virginians, through strategic workforce planning, education, research, and nurse practice development.
