WVU School of Nursing announces postgraduate scholarship in veterans' healthcare

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University School of Nursing has been selected as a scholarship awardee by the Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence, a philanthropic program that works to advance nursing practice and education.

One Ph.D. or Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) WVU student focused on veteran’s healthcare over the 2012-14 academic years will be awarded a $10,000 scholarship.  Additionally, the WVU School of Nursing will provide up to a $2,500 travel stipend for the scholar to attend a leadership conference.

This scholarship is one of 50 to be awarded nationwide. The goal of the new program is to help improve the health of all U.S. veterans, with special emphasis on those returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, by supporting doctoral-level education of nurses who will be involved at all levels of veteran healthcare, from administration and policy to direct patient care and education.

Criteria for this scholarship include:

•    A commitment to a career as a leader in veterans’ health;
•    Meets criteria for Ph.D. or D.N.P. programming, and committing to a mix of online and on-campus meetings as needed for professional development;
•    Attending the leadership development conference;
•    Completion of a research project focused on veterans’ healthcare needs, preferably those identified by the White House and Veterans Administration.

Interested parties must submit a letter articulating career goals and objectives for his or her academic program. Applicants must include an email address, phone number and mailing address in the application letter. Each applicant’s letter of interest and academic transcripts will be reviewed by the selection committee.

The application deadline for the Jonas scholarship is June 15, 2012. Selection will be made June 21 and the awardee will be notified shortly thereafter.
