WVU School of Dentistry offers state high school students a chance to explore dental careers

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University School of Dentistry is inviting high school students from across the state to participate in a free four-day summer program that will provide them with information about dental career opportunities.  Dental ACADEMY (Advancing Career Aspirations for Dentistry among Enthusiastic and Motivated Youth) will be June 19-22 at the School of Dentistry in Morgantown.

“Students who  are interested in dentistry as a career, motivated to achieve,  scientifically curious and inspired to help others will  benefit from attending Dental ACADEMY,” Shelia Price, D.D.S., associate dean for dental admissions, recruitment and access, said.

The program offers many educational experiences to help West Virginia high school students learn about the art and science of dentistry while also strengthening their understanding of the academic skills and personal attributes needed to attend dental school. Participants will have many opportunities to interact with dental faculty and students and will experience interactive seminars on oral health topics, hands-on workshops and dental laboratory demonstrations.

There is no registration fee and meals and lodging on the WVU campus are provided at no cost. Program participants are responsible for their transportation to and from the campus.

Dental ACADEMY is funded by the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, WVU Childhood Oral Health Project (COHP) grant.

“As the state’s flagship institution, it is our responsibility to make sure West Virginia’s oral healthcare needs are met by highly skilled dental professionals for years to come,” Gina Sharps, R.D.H., COHP assistant director, said. “Initiatives such as Dental ACADEMY are extremely exciting and vital in identifying and cultivating the next generation of dentists and dental hygienists.”

Space is limited to the first 20 eligible West Virginia high school students who apply. Individuals who previously participated in the “Brush with Dentistry” summer program will receive priority consideration in the selection process.

The application deadline is June 5. Applicants who are selected to participate in Dental ACADEMY will be notified by email and postal mail
