Allegany County boy’s design featured in 2011 Cards of Hope collection

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Adam Brode, 11, of Cumberland is a featured artist in the 2011 edition of Cards of Hope.

The cards are the main funding source for the Cure Kids Cancer Fund, a project of West Virginia University Children’s Hospital that ensures patients are provided state-of-the-art medical care, as well as psychological and social support for them and their families. Card sales also benefit the Beads of Courage program, which allows pediatric cancer patients the opportunity to tell their cancer stories through strings of beads.

Adam is the son of Scott and Vonda Brode. He was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in February 2009 and undergoes chemotherapy treatments every 29 days. He is a sixth grader at Westmar Middle School and enjoys football, X-Box and Legos.

His card, “Penguin Christmas,” is sponsored by Timmy’s Fund. It features several penguins, a sleigh, a Christmas tree and presents.

Adam chose the design because he loves penguins. His card for the 2010 Cards of Hope collection was a penguin design, so it was only natural for him to do another penguin card. When he was an in-patient at WVU Children’s Hospital, all his visitors brought penguin things. By the time he left, he had acquired more than 20 stuffed animals.

The other 2011 Cards of Hope artists are:
•    Sierra Anderson, 12, of Clarksburg, W.Va.
•    Danielle Bartlett, 12, of Richwood, W.Va.
•    Sarah Flynn, 13, of Fisher, W.Va.
