Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW donates $12,500 to Cancer Center

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW, Department of West Virginia, has donated $12,500 to the West Virginia University Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center for research.

For more than two decades the Ladies Auxiliary has supported the Cancer Center, raising more than $125,000 for research efforts. “Supporting cancer research is part of our national ladies auxiliary program, but it is also something we feel very strongly about,” said Joyce Dyer, secretary of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. “Cancer is a disease that has either touched our lives or the lives of those we love.”

Dyer credits the success of this year's efforts to Bettyjean Zigler, the 2009-2010 State Cancer Aid and Research chair, who recently lost her husband to cancer. "Much of the success of our fundraiser for WVU’s Cancer Center is due to her involvement. She encouraged all auxiliary chairs to contribute, gave suggestions on how to fund raise and provided materials to educate our members on the types of cancer, cancer warning signs and nutrition.”

“I too am a cancer survivor,” Dyer added.  “My thanks to all the people doing research. We survivors appreciate all that they do.”
