WVU professor authors medical school study aid

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Preparation for medical school anatomy courses and licensing exams is a grueling rite of passage for future doctors. A West Virginia University associate professor has co-authored a unique new text that aims to challenge students’ analytical skills while providing direction for targeted study.

H. Wayne Lambert, Ph.D., spent a year developing and compiling 424 questions that emphasize frequently tested material, key concepts and memory aids. More than 200 images illustrate “Lippincott’s Illustrated Q&A Review of Anatomy and Embryology.”

“Let’s just say I pulled a ton of all-nighters to get this book published on time while trying to juggle my professional and family responsibilities,” said Dr. Lambert. “It was a long, yet rewarding, process. Moreover, the involvement of WVU faculty, staff and students improved the textbook dramatically by making it even more accurate, clinically oriented and visually appealing.”

Released in July, the book ranks high in Amazon.com’s international sales rankings, particularly in Japan and the United Kingdom. “As with most review books, the students themselves will dictate the success of the book,” said Lambert. “If they find the book beneficial, its popularity will increase dramatically.”

Lambert, a Keyser native, has helped write and develop six textbooks to date, and has received invitations to work with the National Board of Medical Examiners and the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations.

In 2010, Lambert received the WVU Distinguished Teacher Award for M.D. Programs and the WVU School of Medicine John W. Traubert Award. The Traubert recipient, selected by the student body, is a "student-centered faculty member who displays the characteristics of honest and ethical communication, respect, approachability, positive attitude, and willingness to serve as a mentor."
