WVU dental students to participate in Ninth Annual Professionalism Assembly

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – First-year dental students in the West Virginia University School of Dentistry’s Class of 2014 will participate in the school’s Ninth Annual Professionalism Assembly at 3 p.m. Aug. 20 in the Okey Patteson Auditorium.

“The WVU School of Dentistry maintains an exemplary educational environment that is supported by a longstanding tradition of professionalism. The Professionalism Assembly is held annually to underscore the significance of this rich tradition,” Shelia Price, D.D.S., associate dean for dental admissions, recruitment and access and program emcee, said. “It marks the culmination and celebratory component of the dental student orientation program.”

The assembly is intended to raise awareness of professional standards that are integral to success in dental school and necessary to sustain public trust in the dental profession. As an indication of dedication to the educational environment of integrity, members of the entering dental class repeat in unison the Pledge of Professionalism and individually sign the corresponding document in the presence of their families, friends and dental faculty and staff.  Each student is given a specially imprinted pen that commemorates the occasion.

“This ceremony marks the beginning of a journey for our students as they begin to develop into competent oral health care practitioners,” Louise Veselicky, D.D.S., interim dean, said. “As they pursue their studies, they must pursue them as a professional would do with utmost honesty, enthusiasm, dedication and compassion.”
