WVU School of Medicine sponsors 4th annual Run for Cover 5K Run/Walk

Proceeds to benefit homeless

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – On Sat., Mar. 20, the West Virginia University School of Medicine’s student chapters of the American Medical Association (AMA) and American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) are hosting the fourth annual “Run for Cover” 5K run/walk. The race begins at 2 p.m. at Star City Park near the John F. Kennedy memorial on the rail trail in Star City. The event will benefit Bartlett House, a local homeless shelter.

“Bartlett House provides all of the meals, personal care items, linens, etc., for residents who are staying at the shelter,” Keri DeMasi, executive director of Bartlett House, Inc. said. “The proceeds we receive from ‘Run for Cover’ go to the shelter for operations of the facility.” The Bartlett House provides food, shelter and medical referrals, as well as case management, in its mission to break the cycle of homelessness.

Last year, 160 people participated in “Run for Cover,” raising $4,000. Local businesses have donated door prizes for a silent auction that will be held before the race begins. Proceeds from the silent auction will also be donated to Bartlett House.

Students studying medicine, nursing, dentistry, medical technology, occupational therapy, and exercise physiology can earn service hours for participating in the event. First place male and female runners will receive a WVU School of Medicine T-shirt and gift certificates from a local business.

Due to partial closing on the rail trail, runners and walkers will be going in one direction on the trail, so the race will be a turnaround, with participants meeting back at the starting point. Runners will begin promptly at 2 p.m., and walkers will begin shortly after.

Although it is not a race requirement, all “Run for Cover” participants are encouraged to raise at least $100 in sponsorships. All donations should be submitted the morning of the race.

Participants who register online before the race will pay an early bird registration fee of $15. Registration begins at 1 p.m. the day of the race with a registration fee of $20.
