Fashion show to raise alcohol awareness

“Tacky or Tasteful?” event is March 8

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sorority members at West Virginia University will participate in a fashion show March 8 in the Mountainlair Ballrooms to demonstrate the negative fashion choices women can engage in when alcohol is in the mix.

The “Tacky or Tasteful?” fashion show and “What Not to Drink” game show are being held to increase awareness of the dangers of alcohol among college women. The event is the result of the collaborative efforts of the WVU Department of Community Medicine, WELL WVU, WVU sororities, the Waterfront Spa and Salon, and Bead Monster Boutique.

Ruth Kershner, Ed.D., associate professor in the WVU Department of Community Medicine, said the goal of the fashion and game shows are to demonstrate positive choices women can make while consuming alcohol.

“The focus is to reach students in a way that is fun, relatable and informative and creates awareness of a problem on college campuses,” she said.

Two grand prizes will be awarded for the fashion show – one for most tacky outfit and one for most tasteful outfit. During the game show, contests who answer questions correctly will receive a prize.

In addition, those who attend the event will receive alcohol safety related prizes.

The fashion show starts at 7 p.m. and admission is free.
