Menu tips to make your holidays healthier

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Want to make your holiday meal healthier without saying goodbye to your traditional menu items?

The West Virginia University School of Pharmacy Health Education Center will present a free healthy holiday cooking class Dec. 2 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Suncrest United Methodist Church, 479 Van Voorhis Road.

“The holidays are a time for family and friends, and with those gatherings comes all the food to celebrate,” fourth-year pharmacy student Kelsey Slanina said. “The WVU School of Pharmacy Health Education Center is providing this cooking seminar to help those who are preparing holiday meals make healthier choices on their menus.”

Attendees will receive tips on preparing holiday foods, ideas for healthy cooking substitutions and ways to avoid overindulging when attending holiday parties.

“Holiday menus can be particularly difficult for those who have health conditions or are trying to manage their weight,” Slanina said. “Not to mention those who are preparing the foods may be under more stress because they have to keep these dietary restrictions for their guests in mind. But with a little menu and party planning, everyone can have a healthier, happier holiday celebration.”
