Annual Women on Wellness retreat is Aug. 1

Fairmont retreat takes place at Heston Farm

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The annual Women on Wellness (WOW) retreat in Fairmont is scheduled for Aug. 1. The National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health at West Virginia University sponsors the retreats, which aim to inspire women to make changes that will impact their health and the health of those they love.

Women who attend will spend the day developing a personalized wellness program.  Women will be introduced to resources and options that can help them develop a plan, and  they will learn strategies for changing unconstructive behaviors.

The Aug. 1 retreat takes place at Heston Farm, in Marion County, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

To register, go online to www.wvhealthywomen.org, e-mail ecparsons@hsc.wvu.edu or call 304-293-2895.

“We are delighted to be offering this day for women in the Fairmont area again,” Betty Critch, executive director, said. “Not only will women have the refreshing experience of balancing mind, body and soul, but also the information they receive will help them lead their families to a healthy lifestyle.”

WOW retreats don’t promote specific brands of diet or exercise but promote principles that help guide women to make healthful choices, Critch said.

Among the features at WOW retreats:

  • Opportunities to try ways to become more active such as yoga and Zumba
  • Educational health sessions addressing holistic, preventive and chronic care issues
  • Health screenings

Hundreds of women throughout West Virginia have participated in WOW retreats, which have been held in Marion, Mercer, Hampshire and other counties.
“A $50 donation includes program materials, lunch and snack breaks. Scholarships are available. No woman will be turned away due to lack of funds, but spaces are limited,” Critch said.

The WVU Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center is one of 20 nationally designated Centers of Excellence in Women’s Health. This designation is awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service’s Office of Women’s Health.
