Wimsatt to Lead OLAR

Jeffrey H. Wimsatt, D.V.M, Ph.D, will be joining the Health Sciences Center as Director of the Office of Laboratory Animal Resources (OLAR), according to Interim Vice President Fred R. Butcher, Ph.D. He is expected to assume his new role this fall.

Dr. Wimsatt is an accomplished and widely published veterinary researcher. Since 2001, he has been on the faculty of Department of Medicine at the University of Virginia Medical School, with concurrent appointments in the University's Biology and Psychology departments. He served as campus veterinarian for UVa's College of Arts and Sciences, overseeing animal laboratories on campus and at three off-campus field stations. He also serves as a consulting veterinarian in the USGS plague research program based in Fort Collins, Colo.

He earned his undergraduate and veterinary degrees at Cornell, completed postgraduate studies at UC-Davis and Cornell and is board certified in Laboratory Animal Medicine.

At WVU, he will take charge of expanding laboratory animal facilities, serve on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and manage the veterinary and animal care technician staff of OLAR. He will be the primary administrator responsible for maintaining the facility's accreditations, and work with administrators and facilities personnel to complete the new animal holding space.

OLAR also provides training to all personnel in the Health Sciences Center whose work involves the use of laboratory animals.

"Dr. Wimsatt's recruitment to WVU is due in no small part to the work of the Search Committee led by Dr. Peter Mathers," Butcher said . "Please join me in thanking them for their effort and in welcoming Dr. Wimsatt to our community."
