WVU School of Medicine sponsors ‘Run for Cover’

Proceeds to benefit organization that helps homeless

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University School of Medicine is one of three sponsors of a 5K run/walk to benefit the Bartlett House March 28 at 2 p.m. at Star City Park. The third annual “Run for Cover 5K” will take place near the John F. Kennedy memorial on the rail trail in Star City.

The two other sponsors are the American Medical Association and American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA).

Runners will run in one direction on the trail, and walkers will go in the opposite direction. The race will be a “turnaround,” with participants meeting back at the starting point.

Although it is not a race requirement, all “Run for Cover” participants are encouraged to raise at least $100 in sponsorships. All donations should be submitted the morning of the race.

“The proceeds that Bartlett House receives from ‘Run for Cover’ go to the shelter for operations of the facility,” Keri DeMasi, executive director of Bartlett House, Inc., said. “This can include purchasing supplies for the 70-plus men, women and children that we serve.”

Bartlett House provides food, shelter and medical referrals, as well as case management, to help break the cycle of homelessness.

“The Bartlett House provides all of the meals, personal care items, linens, etc., for residents who are staying at the shelter,” DeMasi said.

Participants in the field of medicine, nursing, dentistry, medical technology, occupational therapy, and exercise physiology can earn service hours for participating in the event.

First place male and female runners will receive a “Team Medicine” t-shirt and a gift certificate from a local business.

Race participates who register online by March 12th will receive a free t-shirt and will pay an early bird registration fee of $15. Registration begins at 1 p.m. the day of the race with a registration fee of $20.

Last year, about 100 people participated in “Run for Cover,” raising $4,000. An anonymous donor matched that amount for a total of $8,000.
