5th annual Teaching Scholars Summer Institute in June

‘Best way to teach is to keep learning’

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The fifth annual Teaching Scholars Summer Institute will take place June 1 to 5 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Robert C. Byrd Health Science Center at West Virginia University.

The program is not exclusive to WVU scholars. The institute is open to anyone in the health science profession who wants to improve his or her teaching skills.

“This program is recognized beyond WVU,” Rashida Khakoo, M.D., assistant vice president of faculty development, said. “Scholars from across the country also participate in the program, which is beneficial because everyone can learn from one another.”

The program is also an opportunity for healthcare professionals to gain continuing education credit hours.

“The best way to teach is to keep learning,” Gwen Marshall, WVU HSC Program Manager, said.

The summer program will include discussions from various WVU educators. This year’s keynote speaker, an expert in problem-based learning, is Mary Wimmer, Ph.D., WVU professor of Biochemistry.

“Problem-based learning is a teaching method in which clinical cases are used as a framework for students to learn the basic science behind disease,” said Wimmer. She expects students to develop skills in life-long learning, teamwork and communication, which will serve them well in their clinical pursuits.

“The teaching scholars program also explores what is involved in being an effective facilitator for these small groups and what behaviors to observe in evaluating student performance,” Wimmer said.

She will also be reflecting on her 30 years of teaching at WVU; what she has learned, the changes she has observed and her thoughts on the future.

“Speakers at the event are not paid,” Marshall said. “They voluntarily donate their time, knowledge and resources to promote teaching and learning.”

Early bird fee is $800 if registered by March 13. The cost is $1,000 if registered later. Attendees are required to attend all sessions through 5 p.m. on Friday June 5.
