Mark calendar for ‘Covered Smile’ speech

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A reminder: West Virginia native Sonja Lauren will give a presentation on Thursday, Feb. 26, from noon to 2 p.m. at the WVU Health Sciences Center, Okey Patteson Auditorium, sponsored by the West Virginia University School of Dentistry.

Lauren, who now works managing a dental practice, suffered childhood abuse and neglect. Severe dental problems went untreated for years, and she lost her teeth and began wearing dentures at age 13. Having endured many painful oral surgeries throughout her life, she is now an advocate for the prevention of child neglect and abuse and for the promotion of oral health.

Her book, “The Covered Smile,” is described as a story of abuse, neglect, recovery, forgiveness and triumph.  Overcoming years of pain and humiliation, she shares her failures and victories and speaks of the value of faith and forgiveness.

Lauren will make two other public appearances in Morgantown:

  • A public talk Feb. 25, noon to 1 p.m., in the Rhododendron Room, Mountainlair, on the downtown campus of WVU, followed by a book signing.
  • A “fireside chat” Feb. 25, 5:30 to 7 p.m., with students in Knapp Hall, on the downtown campus of WVU.

Lauren, who lives in Richmond, Va., has become a volunteer for Mission of Mercy, which provides free dental care.
