Fire incident resolved at Health Sciences

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A small fire in an unoccupied fifth-floor lab in the Health Sciences Building forced evacuation of some areas before 8 a.m. today.

The fire originated in a laboratory dryer unit used routinely in biomedical research. The fire was limited to the area in and immediately around the dryer unit.  Health Sciences safety officers put out the fire using a single fire extinguisher.

The Morgantown Fire Department responded as well. No injuries were reported.

By 10:30 a.m., all areas of the building were reoccupied.

All patient care areas are operating normally and open for patients, including the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center, the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center, Sleeth Family Medicine Center, Student Health, the medical imaging facilities and the WVU Dental Clinics.

The Health Sciences safety team will continue to investigate the incident.
