WVU physician elected to Commission on Cancer

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Magesh Sundaram, M.D., chief of the Surgical Oncology Division in the Department of Surgery at West Virginia University, has been elected to the Commission on Cancer.

A multidisciplinary program of the American College of Surgeons, the commission is a consortium of organizations dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research and education. The commission also monitors quality of care.

In his role Dr. Sundaram will help shape the commission’s educational programs and activities of the Cancer Liaison Program, a network of more than 1,600 volunteer physicians who provide local support for the commission’s programs and activities.

Sundaram was one of eight selected from a list of 34 nominees appointed to three-year terms representing the Fellowship of the American College of Surgeons.  A nomination letter described him as a champion and advocate for improving the standards of cancer care in West Virginia.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) presented him its Providing Hope Award earlier this year.
The award recognizes a medical volunteer who makes an outstanding contribution to the ACS through service and by making a difference in the lives of cancer patients.

Sundaram has served as the West Virginia state chair for cancer liaison physicians for four years.  As state chair he encourages all cancer liaison physicians to get involved with the local ACS.  He also chairs the WVU Hospitals Cancer Committee.

Sundaram provides diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal cancers, including cancers of the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, pancreas, liver and colon.

He received his medical degree from the University of Maryland, completed a surgery residency at the Medical Center of Delaware and did a fellowship in surgical oncology at the University of Miami. He also was section chief of general surgery at the Miami VA Medical Center.
