Vaughan Named Chair of WVU Surgery

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Richard Vaughan, M.D., has been named chair of the West Virginia University Department of Surgery in the WVU School of Medicine.

As chair, Dr. Vaughan will lead physicians and other faculty who provide surgical care for patients, conduct research, and educate future physicians at WVU Hospitals and Health Sciences.  In 2007, nearly 19,000 total inpatient and outpatient surgeries were performed at WVU.

“Dr. Vaughan has been a strong and steady leader of the surgery department since he became interim chair more than a year ago,” John Prescott, M.D., dean of the WVU School of Medicine, said.  “Dr. Vaughan is admired statewide for his expertise as a surgeon, as well as for his integrity and character.”

Bruce McClymonds, president and CEO of WVU Hospitals, said Dr. Vaughan was chosen as the best candidate for the job after a national search.

“The surgery department has a proud reputation for excellence. We look forward to even greater accomplishments under Dr. Vaughan’s leadership,” McClymonds said.

Dr. Vaughan has served on the faculty of WVU, in various leadership positions, since 1984, including chief of staff for WVU Hospitals and chair of the University Health Associates Board of Directors.

He has been honored as an outstanding teacher and received the Dean’s Award for Excellence twice.

Vaughan, a native of Beckley, W.Va., earned his medical degree and completed his residency at WVU.
