WVU Hospitals hosts “Unite-a-thon” Oct. 18-19

For 19 hours, beginning at 7 a.m. Thursday, West Virginia University Hospitals will hold its annual Unite-a-thon, a series of events and fundraisers on the lawn of Ruby Memorial Hospital and in the hospital lobby, to benefit the United Way of Monongalia and Preston Counties.

The event provides employees and community members the opportunity to make a donation.  There are two ways to contribute:  with monetary donations and personal care items.

Items being collected include toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, mouthwash, deodorant, disposable razors, soap, lotions, shampoo, conditioner, combs, brushes, cotton swabs, cotton balls and laundry supplies. The United Way will distribute these items to local service agencies.

To celebrate WVU’s Homecoming, this year’s Unite-a-thon will also feature games, raffles, a silent auction and an Ultimate Mountaineer Pet Fan competition.

Hospital volunteers will offer baked goods for sale in the hospital’s lobby beginning at 10 a.m., and Cold Stone Creamery will sell ice cream with 50 percent of the proceeds benefiting the United Way.
2008 United Way Campaign Chair John Forester will also be part of the festivities.  He’ll play his banjo at 11 a.m.

Also on Thursday, between 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. – 12:30 a.m. a two-dollar hotdog, chips and drink meal will be offered.

All proceeds will benefit the United Way.
