WVUH Triathlon to Benefit Habitat for Humanity
Registration deadline is Aug. 15
Local children and adults are gearing up to participate in WVU Hospitals’ Sprint, Splash & Spin triathlon at Marilla Park in Morgantown on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 24-25.

Designed to highlight Morgantown’s recreational facilities and encourage exercise, the triathlon is a fund-raiser for Monongalia County Habitat for Humanity.

“Sprint, Splash, & Spin allows the community to contribute to a great local cause and have fun at the same time,” Chris Haddox, executive director of Monongalia County Habitat for Humanity, said.

For kids under the age of 14, the triathlon begins on Friday, Aug. 24, at 6:45 p.m. and will not be timed. The adult individual competition is on Saturday, Aug. 25, between 7 a.m. and noon, with the team relay competition beginning at noon. Triathlon teams can include all male, all female, mixed or family participants.

For the children’s event, participants will be challenged to swim 66 yards (or 2 lengths of Marilla Pool), bike 1.5 miles, and run half a mile. The adult/team competition will include a 330-yard swim (or 10 lengths of Marilla Pool), an 11-mile bike ride, and a 5K run.

An awards ceremony will immediately follow the competitions on Saturday. The top three male and female finishers in the individual competition and age category winners will receive recognition. Participants will also be recognized from each relay category, as well as a physically challenged award.  All children who participate will get a medal.

The triathlon will conclude with a Family Fun Day at Marilla Pool on Saturday with free refreshments and entertainment for all participants, families and volunteers.

Hundreds of community volunteers are needed for the adult and team event on Saturday. Volunteer times are 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. or 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All volunteers will be

required to attend a one-hour orientation meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 22, at 7 p.m. at the Marilla Center. The first 150 registered volunteers will receive an event t-shirt and will be eligible for door prizes.

The fee to participate in the triathlon is $17 for children, $22 for each team relay member, and $42 for each individual adult competitor. The registration deadline is Wednesday, Aug. 15.
