Women’s health retreat Aug. 18 in Marion County

West Virginia women will gather to promote healthy lifestyles  at the 3rd annual Women on Wellness (WOW) retreat, Aug. 18 at Heston Farm in Fairmont.

WOW is a day-long retreat sponsored by the National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health at West Virginia University.  The retreat aims at educating and inspiring women to take an active role in managing their health.

“West Virginia has some of the highest death rates among women from to heart disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory disease, and diabetes-related death,” Barbara Ducatman, M.D., director, said.  “Taking an active role to improve women’s wellness is the first step to change the dismal health statistics in West Virginia.”

Women attending the retreat will leave with a personalized strategy to improve their lifestyle.  Special emphasis will be placed on improving health through exercise, nutrition and chronic disease management.

“Seventy-six percent of all health care decisions are made by women in the home,” Dr. Ducatman said.  “No wellness programs are ‘one size fits all.’  At the end of the day we hope to inspire women to make positive changes in their lifestyles.  It can be as simple as adding a piece of fruit or a vegetable to a diet.”

In addition to nutrition classes, women may sample various exercise programs to help identify which best fits their lifestyle.  Tobacco cessation information and health screenings will be offered at the retreat.

Relaxation is emphasized during the day-long event.  Women will have the opportunity to experience massages, reflexology, makeup demonstrations and holistic massage therapies.

The retreat is free but a $25 donation to offset the cost of the event is appreciated.  For more information or to register, call (304) 293-2895 or visit www.wvhealthywomen.org.
