WVU Professor to Study Biofilms at Cardiff University

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University professor John Thomas, Ph.D., has been selected to study oral biofilms at Cardiff University in Wales.

Dr. Thomas, director of the Clinical Research Laboratory of Microbial Pathology, will join a team of 12 of Britain’s finest researchers to conduct research on the molecular methods of preventing biofilms, which are a cause of cavities, gingivitis and tooth loss.

The researchers’ sabbatical begins July 1 and lasts until December 31, 2007.  Upon his return he hopes to bring a better understanding of the complex issues surrounding biofilms prevention.

“West Virginians rank at the top for having the worst oral health in the country,” Thomas said.  “The research I participate in at Cardiff will hopefully lead to findings that can help people right here in our state.”

Thomas, a Syracuse University alumnus, has taught at WVU since 1990.
