Captain Kindness to Visit WVU Hospitals

Part of Random Acts of Kindness Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The compassionate caped crusader, Captain Kindness, will visit the Child Development Center at West Virginia University Hospital, Thursday, Feb. 15 at 9:30 a.m. His visit highlights a number of activities from Feb. 12-18 during Random Acts of Kindness Week.

WVUH is partnering with the United Way of Monongalia and Preston Counties encouraging local businesses and community members to perform random acts of kindness during the week.

Several departments throughout the hospital are participating with various activities. The departments are listed below:

·        7 East/7 West/9 East -- Supplying a courtesy cart with fruit, snacks and drinks for staff and patients.

·        Child Development Center-- Supplying chocolate "Hugs" and "Kisses" to families staying at Rosenbaum Family House. Room H will be visiting Children's Hospital and delivering candy heart cards to patients.

·        Cardiothoracic Unit/Cardiac Care Unit -- Bringing care packages to former employees who are unable to work and taking valentines to the first-graders at Mylan Park Elementary, the Hospital's new Partner in Education.

·        Emergency Department -- Holding a clothing drive for Bartlett House.

·        Hospital Administration -- Collecting "wish list" items for Ronald McDonald House.

·        Health Sciences Center Cafeteria -- Collecting potholders, dish towels, and aprons for the Salvation Army Food Service.

·        Human Resources & Employee Health -- Holding a food drive for a local shelter.

·        Medical and Surgical Intensive Care Units -- Collecting items -- such as toiletries, candy, books, and blankets -- for area nursing home residents. 

·        Patient Financial Services -- Hosting an afternoon tea for co-workers.

·        Rosenbaum Family House -- Distributing decorative bags of toiletries to those who inquire about a room or who need help getting a discounted hotel room. In addition, families staying at the house will receive grab-bag gifts during the week.

·        Security -- Passing out candy and Random Acts of Kindness cards at the Hospital's parking booth. 

·        Skilled Nursing Unit (SNU) -- Collecting gloves/mittens for Bartlett House and collecting items for the SNU "great room." 

·        STAR Program/Ancillary Outpatient Areas -- Some areas are passing out thank-you notes to patients. The notes include staff members' signatures and are accompanied by a cafeteria coupon or other type of treat. The notes say: "We strive for excellence in the customer service that we provide. We hope that your experience at our hospital exceeded your expectations. Thank you for choosing WVU Hospitals for your health care needs."

·        Volunteer Services -- Offering free cookies and coffee in the Hospital lobby.
