WVU Hospitals, Laborer’s Union Reach Tentative Agreement

Local 814 members to vote on five-year pact Nov. 9

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University Hospitals and Local 814 of the Laborer’s International Union have reached tentative agreement on a five-year contract that will run through 2010.

Union employees will hear details of the proposed contract at a meeting Tuesday, Nov. 7, and hold a ratification vote on Thursday, Nov. 9.

If ratified, the contract will provide a retroactive wage adjustment from January 1, 2006, and annual increases on the first days of 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Both hospital management and the union’s negotiation committee have recommended ratification of the pact.

Local 814 represents more than 900 members. Most work in service and support areas of the hospital, including laundry, dietary, housekeeping, medical records, film room, materials management and sterile processing; the contract also covers clinical and support associates, medical assistants, phlebotomists, unit clerks, anesthesia aides and perioperative care assistants.

The union and the hospital have negotiated an uninterrupted series of contracts since 1985. The previous contract expired at the end of 2005, and negotiations have continued under a contract extension.
