Four Heart Walks Part of This Year’s Expo

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - Heart disease is the leading cause of death in West Virginia and the United States; stroke is number three.

In an effort to support the American Heart Association’s fight against heart disease and stroke, four American Heart Association Heart Walks will take place during this year’s West Virginia University Health Expo on Friday, Oct. 20, at the Morgantown Mall.

“These walks are being held to raise awareness about these diseases,” says Mary Fanning, R.N., chair of the Monongalia County Heart Walks. “They’ll also serve as fund-raisers for the American Heart Association.”

Fanning is director of the adult cardiac nursing units at WVU Hospitals.

Walk participants are asked (not required) to collect contributions from family members and friends. Contributions, which can be made at the walks, will help the American Heart Association fund research, education, and community and support services.

The following walks are planned:

•           8 a.m. – Community Walk led by Mary Fanning, R.N.

•           11 a.m. – “Go Red for Women” Walk led by Claudette Brooks, M.D., WVU neurologist (wear red!)

•           2 p.m. – Mountaineer Walk led by Joanne Carrigan and Linda Newell,

fitness specialists with “Leslie Sansone In-Home Walking”

•           5 p.m. – “Business After Hours” Walk led by Stephen LaCagnin, administrative manager, Jackson Kelly PLLC, and board chair, Morgantown Area Chamber of Commerce

The 8 a.m., 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. walks will involve participants taking a one-mile lap around the outside perimeter of the mall. The meeting point for these walks will be the American Heart Association booth inside the mall, located between the Food Court and the JC Penney entrance.

At the booth, the following will be offered throughout the WVU Health Expo: blood pressure screenings, body fat analyses and cardiac risk assessments. Physicians with the WVU Heart Institute will also be around to answer questions.

The 2 p.m. Mountaineer Walk, which will be a two-mile walk, will take place at the stage area near the Food Court. Participants will walk (and exercise) in place.

“We’re thrilled to have fitness specialists with Leslie Sansone’s well-known walking program leading the 2 p.m. walk,” says Stephanie Bock, director of community relations, WVU Hospitals. “Joanne and Linda both appear in Sansone’s walking videos, and they travel around the country with her promoting her popular walking program. Next year, we’re hoping that Leslie will travel to Morgantown for this event.”

The WVU Health Expo is one of the largest community health events in the area. The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and will feature 45 exhibitors representing departments and programs of WVU Hospitals, University Health Associates, WVU Health Sciences and affiliated organizations.
