WVUH Race to Benefit Children with Cystic Fibrosis

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A race that will benefit children with cystic fibrosis and other pulmonary problems will be held Saturday, Sept. 16. The September Stride is a 5K (3.1 mile) run and walk, sponsored by West Virginia University Hospitals.

The race’s start/finish line is in front of the hospital. The course loops around the hospital parking lots and continues along Van Voorhis and Chestnut Ridge roads. The race gets under way at 9 a.m.

Proceeds from the September Stride benefit the Richard Rosenbaum Memorial Fund, which provides medication and equipment to children with cystic fibrosis and other pulmonary problems.

Richard “Rick” Rosenbaum, who was treated for cystic fibrosis at WVU since birth, died at age 36 in 1995. He was a dedicated advocate for children’s programs associated with the hospital. Rosenbaum was a local businessman and good friend to many of the organizers of this event. His family is responsible for creating the fund.

The race fee is $15 for the general public and $13 for employees of WVUH, UHA and WVUH Health Sciences if postmarked by Friday, Sept. 8. After this date and on race day, the cost is $18.

The fee includes a T-shirt and a pasta dinner on Friday, Sept. 15. The pasta dinner will be held at 6 p.m. in the WVU Health Sciences Center Cafeteria.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in the 5K run -- $200 for first place; $125 for second; and $75 for third. Prizes also will be awarded to the age group, heavyweight and employee winners in the 5K run, and to winners of the walk. All participants are eligible for prize drawings.

During the 5K run and walk, arts and crafts activities will be provided for kids. At 10 a.m., three kids’ races will be held – two short-distance races for younger kids and a 1K for older kids. Participation in these races is free. Parents must register their children on race morning.

The September Stride is part of the Morgantown Area Grand Prix. For more information or to obtain an entry form, call 598-4118.
