WVU Center for Women Hosts Free Health Program

MORGANTOWN, W. VA. –  The West Virginia University Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health (CoEWH) is hosting “Women on the Water,” a free, educational and preventive health maintenance retreat for women age 18 years and older who would like learn  how to take control of their own health care needs.  It will be held Saturday, July 29 at Heston Farm, a private park located along the Tygart River in Fairmont.

The retreat encourages participants to learn about healthy living options, develop personal health goals, and pass on the benefits of the Center of Excellence in Women’s Health to their communities and families. At the end of the day, it is the goal of the CoEWH that each woman will walk away motivated to take on a healthier lifestyle along with her own personal action plan to accomplish that goal.

The WVU Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center is one of 20 nationally-designated Centers of Excellence in Women’s Health, a designation awarded by the US Department of Health and Human Service’s Office of Women’s Health.

“With the activities such as this retreat, the CoEWH hopes to improve the health and well-being of West Virginia women and ultimately, all West Virginians,” said Barbara Ducatman, M.D., director, CoEWH.

The CoEWH’s goal is to promote research in women’s health issues, develop future women leaders in academic health care, educate health care providers to understand and treat the special health care needs of women and provide comprehensive multidisciplinary health care.

“Through community outreach education programs such as this retreat,  the CoEWH aspires to change the poor overall health ranking of West Virginia women,” Dr. Ducatman said. “While the women of West Virginia may not have control of access to health care, or costs of health care, each women does have the potential to exercise control over her own actions towards promoting wellness of herself and her loved ones and that is what the day is about.”
