WVU Alumnus Promotes Special Event to Fight Breast Cancer

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.— A West Virginia University alumnus who earned her doctoral degree while doing research at the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center is encouraging others to join her in a unique fund-raiser in October to help fight breast cancer.

Jamie Miller, Ph.D., a scientist now at the Institute for Scientific Research in Fairmont, is also an artist.  She will be one of the participants in the first annual Brassiere Bazaar hosted by the Art and Soul Gift Gallery in Fairmont.  The event is open to all and will feature the work of anyone who wishes to decorate a brassiere and donate it to a silent auction at 7 p.m., Oct. 14, at the Fairmont Field Club. Proceeds will benefit local breast cancer endeavors.

Miller will donate the money she raises from her creation to the CASSIE Fund at WVU’s Betty Puskar Breast Care Center.  The fund helps the Breast Care Center in providing diagnostic imaging services to uninsured or underinsured women who don’t qualify for other state or federally funded programs.  She’ll also have some of her handmade jewelry and hand-painted items on sale to benefit the fund.

As a researcher, Miller studies diseases and is part of a team that’s hoping to develop a breast cancer vaccine.  She’s excited about helping people through her work and her art.

“It saddens me that women die of breast cancer because they can’t afford health care coverage to get a mammogram,” says Miller. “I know one person alone can’t solve this dilemma, but I also know that my mother always told me that you would be surprised what could be accomplished if everyone just did a little.  So, I guess this is my little.”

To find out more about the first annual Brassiere Bazaar contact Jamie at or visit the Art and Soul website at .  Art and Soul is located at 232 Adams Street in downtown Fairmont and is owned by Winter Dawn Marie Morin, who can be reached at 304-363-6955. Tickets for the event ($15.00 each) can be purchased locally at Art and Soul, at the Betty Puskar Breast Cancer Center, or by contacting Jamie or Winter.
