National Speaker to Share Story of Courage with Cancer Survivors June 5

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.— A national speaker who uses her successful battle against cancer to inspire others will be the guest speaker at the 12th annual Cancer Survivors Day celebration hosted by the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center and WVU Hospitals.  The event will be held at 4 p.m., Sunday, June 5, at the Knights of Columbus in Star City.

Jane Fletcher White has addressed thousands of people and gained the reputation of changing their lives in a positive and powerful way. She’s known for talking from the heart, and for touching people where they live through her unique blend of humor, music, and inspirational stories.

White is a graduate of Northwestern University and the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York.  Early on she had a very successful career, singing professionally in clubs, television and theater.  She then met the love of her life, got married, and had three children.  Life was good until White learned she had cancer.

“I had a very rare type of cancer under my arm, and doctors could not find its source,” White said.  “They opted to remove my tumor surgically and, thanks to wonderful medical help and the good Lord, I’ve been a survivor now for 27 years.”

The title of White’s talk in June is Wow.What a Ride!  “Cancer is the best thing that ever happened to me,” White said.  “I had a great life, but never fully appreciated it until after cancer.”

White said she put God first during her battle with the disease.  “It increased my sense of faith, made me stronger and I got a sense of peace.”

Her new book, Keeping Myself in Stitches, reveals her message and philosophy.  “Laughter is one thing that everybody needs. The other two things are hope and direction.”

The survivors day celebration in Star City historically draws nearly 400 cancer survivors, their families and friends, from West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Ohio.
