WVU’s Women’s Soccer Team Helps Fight Breast Cancer

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.—West Virginia University’s women’s soccer team will take to the field for the second consecutive year to help kick breast cancer.  All proceeds raised from two separate events on April 2 and 3 will go to the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center of WVU’s Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center.

On Saturday, April 2, eight teams including the five-time NCAA tournament participant Mountaineers, will compete throughout the day in the second annual Betty Puskar Breast Care Center Soccer Invitational at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium adjacent to Hawley Field.  The remaining participating teams are Pitt, Duquesne, Marshall, Virginia Tech, Bethesda Eclipse of Maryland, BRYC Attack of Virginia and Cleveland FC of Ohio.

On Sunday, April 3, the WVU women’s soccer team will hold a four vs. four small-sided tournament at the Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The tournament is open to boys and girls in grades three through eight and to college-age and older groups.  NCAA regulations forbid participation by high school students. Teams will be formed by pairing a WVU women’s soccer player with three qualified participants. Each team will be charged a $75 entry fee. The registration deadline is March 14.

“We are proud to join with our local community to raise awareness for breast cancer,” said Nikki Garzon, assistant coach of WVU’s women’s soccer team.  “We urge people to sign up their group of three and together we’ll have an enjoyable day while contributing to a worthy cause.”

The weekend events are free and open to the public. Donations are greatly appreciated. Last year the team raised more than $4,300 to help fight breast cancer.

All donations should be cash or check and made payable to the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center. Donations can be mailed to WVU Women’s Soccer Office, PO Box 0877, Morgantown, WV 26507.  For more information about donations and soccer events, contact Garzon at (304) 293-2300, ext. 5546 or via e-mail at Nikki.Garzon@mail.wvu.edu.
