About UHA
University Health Associates (UHA) is West Virginia's largest multi-specialty physician and dental group practice.
The mission of UHA is to support West Virginia University's Schools of Medicine and Dentistry and to improve the lives of our patients, physicians, dentists, students, and employees by maintaining an efficient, effective, and friendly academic and clinical practice environment. UHA provides support services that allow faculty members to practice their professions.
UHA is the business name for the West Virginia University Medical Corporation and the West Virginia University Dental Corporation. Each is a private, not-for-profit corporation composed of faculty members of the WVU School of Medicine and School of Dentistry.
UHA also operates faculty clinics around the state, including in Elkins, Harpers Ferry, Martinsburg, Ranson, Weston, and Wheeling, and provides support to faculty members who practice in a number of West Virginia hospitals.
HISTORY
In 1961, shortly after the creation of the Health Sciences Center, the WVU Board of Regents authorized the faculty to create a practice plan organization. It was known as the Physicians Fee Office and its function was to collect payments from patients and insurance companies and use these funds to support the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry. It adopted the name WVU Medical Corporation in 1971, and in 1987 began doing business as University Health Associates.
In the decades since it was established, UHA has contributed a substantial portion of the cost of education for thousands of medical and dental students, allowed WVU to recruit and retain highly qualified faculty members, and financed the construction of many facilities that serve patients and students, including the Physician Office Center. UHA also provides millions of dollars in care each year to West Virginians who could not otherwise afford medical treatment.
